If you’re planning to explore Phnom Penh on a budget, the city bus is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get around. It might seem a bit confusing at first, especially if you don’t speak Khmer, but don’t worry — here’s a simple guide to help you ride like a local.
Step 1: Download the City Bus App
First things first, go to the App Store or Google Play Store and search for “City Bus” (look for the one by Phnom Penh City Bus Authority). Download and install it.
Once installed, open the app. You’ll probably see some announcements or updates in Khmer — just ignore them for now.
What you want to do is click on “LIVE” (you’ll find it on the main screen). This will open a map showing your current location and nearby bus stops. You’ll also see real-time bus locations moving across the map — this helps you track which bus is close to you.
Step 3: Find Your Route
Head to the nearest bus stop. Once you’re there, open the app again and tap the a small buttons on the bottom rightcorner of the screen. This will show all the bus lines and their routes (each route is marked with a different color).
You can also use the search feature to type in your destination. The app will tell you which line to take and where to get on or off.
Step 4: Hop on the Right Bus
When the bus arrives, check the line number on the front windshield. This tells you which route it’s on. Make sure it’s the one you need before getting in.
Once you hop on, prepare 1,500 riel per person (about $0.37 USD) for the fare. It’s best to bring exact change, as drivers don’t provide change.

Step 5: Ring the Bell Before Your Stop
As your stop gets close, press the red button on the pole inside the bus. You’ll hear a small “ding” sound — that’s your signal to the driver that you want to get off at the next stop.
That’s it! Simple, right? Riding the city bus in Cambodia is not only cheap, but also a fun way to experience local life. Don’t hesitate to chat with other passengers — Cambodians are known for being some of the friendliest people in the world.
